Grand Rapids, Michigan

Sitting on the bank of the beautiful Grand River, Michigan has one of the most diverse climates in all of the United States, swinging from warm and humid summers to snowy winters that bathe the city with a breathtaking layer of white. A favorite of nature lovers of all sorts, Grand Rapids tourist guides offer plenty of options for those seeking fantastic trips down the river or various winter sports like skiing and ice-skating.

Most visitors of the city are taken aback by Grand Rapids' impressive skyline. Surrounded by greenery and nature everywhere, Grand Rapids' commanding business district explodes onto the scenery with its collection of modern buildings.

But the city took a while to build its reputation. In the beginning of the 19th century, fur traders, missionaries and businessmen of all kinds found a warm, comfortable place to settle down and lead their lives through honest work. Surrounded by scores of trees of remarkable quality, it didn't take long to transform Grand Rapids into the most important lumbering center of the United States. In the International Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia, its fame had grown considerably into what is now known as "Furniture city": a world-leader in the home furnishing market.

A glance at the Grand Rapids Business Directory shows how the city has diversified through the course of time. Apart from major office furniture manufacturers, the health science sector has recently found an ideal location for its headquarters. Various research institutes and important universities have brought major investments to the region.

Of course, Grand Rapids' travel guides focus on the marvelous opportunities for outdoor sports present in the area. Whether you practice ice hockey or enjoy rafting down a transparent river, national and international tourists flock towards the city all around the year. This has lead to the development of many of Grand Rapids' local businesses that provide different services for all kinds of travelers. But it has also created a rich, arts and culture network that holds museums such as the Gerald Ford Museum or the City Archives and Records Center, which holds the Dead Sea Scrolls and numerous treasures of ancient Egypt.

Another of the city's hidden treasures is its amazing collection of Victorian homes, arguably the largest in the country. Visitors can't miss the Meyer May House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1908 and open to the public as a free museum.

Also home to many colleges and universities, Grand Rapids holds a hungry, young population that keeps the city alive with artistic events. Eastown and the Heartside District has long been a bastion for a dynamic counter-culture and music scene that fuels festivals and popular concert venues with all kinds of live acts.

All these characteristics make the city of Grand Rapids a perfect option, either for leisure or business. With an imposing conference center downtown and a beautiful forest standing tall against the horizon, the city is a great combination of modernism and nature.
